There’s a new sheriff in town, and the rules are getting more strict. With the European Union’s General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR), and the Chinese Personal Information Security Specification now in effect, compounded by individual states taking stricter stances like the recently adopted California Consumer Privacy Act, organizations must get serious about consumer privacy. In essence, the so-called “right to be forgotten” must be augmented by the right to be respected. The key to success will be to align data with business outcomes, business processes and information architecture. Well defined governance frameworks and procedures, combined with technologies such as data catalogs will be key to addressing the right to be respected and developing consumer trust.
