Our current workforce offers 3.5 million opportunities for security professionals and yet businesses themselves don’t know how to be secure. This leaves an undeniable disconnect between companies and their customers that employees are expected to mitigate with little to no guidance.
On August 3, 2020, Sidd Gavirneni, CEO and Co-Founder of Zeguro and Andre Ferraz, Founder and CEO of Incognia guested on Inside Analysis to discuss cybersecurity with host Eric Kavanagh.
“Companies are afraid to implement policy because they don’t have that streamlined user experience to understand their customers,” explained Gavirneni. However, understanding customers is the key to knowing which security policies to set in place and how. Ferraz said, “The user is the weakest link, but what is unique about each user provides the security we need.”
Regardless of companies’ specific security needs, Gavirneni recommends “that companies have eight to ten policies set in place, including data security policies and back-up policies.” Then, it’s up to each company to determine the optimal frequency for such backups and how many security professionals are needed to bring on to make those backups possible. According to Ferraz, the answers to these important questions can be found by delving into consumers’ behavior: “Analyze behavior more than static credentials,” he recommended. “You’ll be more successful at providing a good user experience to your customers.”
Defending against cyber breaches, however, comes down to way more than any single customer, manager or employee. “The number one cause for cyber breaches is people’s not knowing how to defend themselves,” said Gavirneni. Companies need to take the time to become and stay informed about the best practices for cybersecurity.
